Groundhogs See Their "Shadows"

February 1st, 2009

Written by The Magazine of Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita will join communities across the nation in participating in Groundhog Job Shadow Day, the kickoff to Job Shadowing 2009, a yearlong initiative. On Wednesday, February 4, 2009, students will get an up-close look at how the skills they learn in school are put into action in the workplace. They will shadow a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job.

The job shadow day will take place at various locations across the Santa Clarita Valley including: Ultra Violet Devices, Bank of Santa Clarita, Mercedes-Benz of Valencia, Castaic Lake Water Agency, Hyatt Valencia, Peak Performance Chiropractic, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Artistic Smiles, Wildcat Technology Solutions and It’s a Laugh Productions, Inc.

The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with employers and everyone will meet from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex Gym for the luncheon to honor Business Mentors and their shadows.  Keynote Speaker will be Jay Thomas, President Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor.

National Groundhog Job Shadow day is designed to give kids an opportunity to “shadow” an adult during their daily work activities.  Job Shadowing inspires kids to be enthusiastic about their studies by showing them the correlation between what they learn in school and how it is used in the workplace.  Historically, more than one million young people and 100,000 businesses participate in National Groundhog Job Shadow Day.

Job shadowing in SCV is coordinated by the Santa Clarita Valley School & Business Alliance, a local nonprofit organization that provide early career exploration programs for K-12 students. This year’s event is funded by title sponsor Six Flags Magic Mountain, as well as an impressive line-up of community sponsors including Boston Scientific, Charter College, Poole & Shaffrey, Lundgren Management, Hart District Regional Occupational Program, and Imber Court Reporters.

With continued support by the William S. Hart Union High School District and the City of Santa Clarita, the SCV School & Business Alliance will aim to place over 200 students from eight local high schools with over 80 business mentors on Wednesday, February 4, 2009.  We are thrilled at the generosity of local business and industry in opening their doors to our students.  Groundhog Job Shadow Day provides a unique opportunity to make the world of work come alive for Santa Clarita students.
